ââ¬ÅDeathââ¬Â Comparison Essay Essay
Editors play influential roles in literature. They can easily alter the overall atmosphere of literature or change the message behind it. Different versions of the poem ââ¬Å"I heard a Fly buzzâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ by Emily Dickinson demonstrate different caesura, capitalization and word usage. The 1955 edition by Thomas H. Johnson and the original version by Emily Dickinson portray almost identical ideas and emphasis through limited alteration of caesura and word capitalization in relation to death as somewhat unimportant event. Caesura is one of the most crucial elements in classic English poetry. It can either change the pace or the atmosphere of the work. Emily Dickinson uses caesura in her poem ââ¬Å"Dyingâ⬠to demonstrate death as a slow and unspiritual event. Both the 1955 edition and the original edition share the same style of caesura from the start to the end. In the original version, Dickinson uses a vast number of hyphens between sentences. For example, the first two sentences of the poem, ââ¬Å"I heard a Fly buzz-when/ I died-â⬠, depicts how the author uses hyphens between every phrase to portray short breaths of a dying individual. The author uses short breathed pace of the poem to describe the narratorââ¬â¢s slow process of death and nonspiritual side of death. In addition, the author implies how death does not contain any kind of sudden or spiritual endings. In the 1955 edition, Johnson places caesuras in almost identical places to preserve the original workââ¬â¢s perception of death. As a result, the 1955 edition successfully displays images of a dying narrator and the short paced poet structure. With the same style of caesura, the 1955 edition brings out the original versionââ¬â¢s idea about death being a slow yet nonspiritual everyday occurrence. Often poets use capitalization as a tool to emphasize specific words. Two versions of the poem ââ¬Å"Dyingâ⬠capitalize overlapping words to express equal emphasis. In the original version of the poem Emily Dickinson constantlyà focuses on incoherent words such as ââ¬Å"roomâ⬠and ââ¬Å"fly.â⬠The author uses emphasis on the room to create an illusion of an isolated space. Dickinson utilize this illusion introduce the emptiness of death. The constant capitalization of the word ââ¬Å"flyâ⬠causes readersââ¬â¢ attention to move away from the dying narrator. This ironic emphasis on the fly, transforms this serious theme called death into something that is minor and insignificant. Two versions of the poem, the 1955 edition and the original edition, have minor difference in their capitalization style; the only difference is the capitalization of the word ââ¬Å"around.â⬠In the 1955 edition, Johnson capitalizes the words ââ¬Å"flyâ⬠and ââ¬Å"roomâ⬠throughout the poem. As a result of this capitalization Johnson successfully creates an atmosphere that is identical to the original version. Johnson also inherits Dickinsonââ¬â¢s original intention to minimize the importance of death and to make something miniscule, a fly, as the center of attention. The 1955 edition shares an incredible amount of similarities with the original version; the style of caesura and the capitalization of specific words. The 1955 edition places hyphens in the exact same places to preserve the original versionââ¬â¢s ideas about death being a slow natural process. In addition, both of the 1955 edition and the original version emphasize significant words such as ââ¬Å"fly and ââ¬Å"roomâ⬠to represent the insignificance of death, rather than portraying death as a major event in human lives. Understanding Work Related Injuries
Have you ever thought what would happen if you got hurt on the job or while traveling between offices or worse yet if you get sick because of the type of work that you are employed to do? If you sometimes think about this there is no need to worry. The reason that I say this because every company out there Federal and State alike are required to have workers compensation benefits. There are rules and regulation that are put into place to keep you safe while on the job or on the companyââ¬â¢s property. The organization that oversees this would be the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) that was developed in 1970 to protect workers from health and safety risks. Although all employers are overseen by OSHA there are a select few that are not these would be independent contractors, churches, domestic workers in private home settings, and federal employees (Valerius?Bayes?Newby?Seggern, 2008). Federal employers have their own compensation plans that are covered under the Federal Employeesââ¬â¢ Compensation ACT (FECA). The first of four plans would be the long shore and Harbor workersââ¬â¢ compensation plans. This covers employees of in the maritime field. The second federal program would be the Black Lung Program. This covers employees that are employed or previously employed in coal mines. The third and final program is the energy employees occupational illness compensation program act. This covers employees or previous employees that have developed cancer and other serious illness from energy exposure. State workerââ¬â¢s compensation covers all others except federal employees, inmates employed by the prison; self- employed, for hire domestic, drivers under lease agreement, volunteers, independent, clergy and church members, and lastly agricultural laborers. No matter if you are a state or federal employee there are two different workers compensation programs that you will be covered under. The first one covers the medical costs that are incurred due to the injury; the second covers the lost wages that has come from the injury. When a person is injured on the job, on the companyââ¬â¢s property, or performing a work related task they will be covered under workers compensation. If an employee is injured they need to inform their employer promptly so that proper medical treatment can commence. The employee usually needs to put the injury in writing also known as the first report of injury, the physician depending on the insurance may need to be the one to fill this form in. Once this is done the employer also has to file their own claim with the state workers compensation office as well as the insurance company (Workers Compensation- the Workers' Comp Service Center, 2009). Depending on the severity and urgency of the injury the insurance company may require a form to be filled out by the physician of record. The physician of record is the physician who first treats the employee. This physician is also responsible for determining the amount of disability and if and when the employee may return to work. The Physicians of Record must according to insurance company or state regulation must file a progress report at certain intervals of the treatment or when there is a change that will affect the disability status. Once the insurance company gets the claims that may be filed electronically depending on the carrier has to now issue a claim number and identify if the injury will or will not be covered by workers compensation. Once this is determined than the insurance company needs to notify the employer on the determination. If the claim is accepted than monies that the employee loses from not being able to work are sent right the employee with no income tax being withheld and all medical bills are paid. If the claim is denied by workers compensation than the employee is responsible for the medical bills and may submit the medical bills to their own medical insurance carrier to be paid, but the employee does not receive lost wages. No matter what the outcome is of the claim HIPPA rules and regulations are not strictly enforced to keep the privacy of the injured employee. However, most states allow claims adjusters and employers unrestricted access to the workers compensation files. Patient Health Information may be disclosed without the patientââ¬â¢s authorization. The employee cannot even ask that their information be withheld from the employer. References: Valerius?Bayes?Newby?Seggern. (2008). Medical Insurance: An. The McGraw?Hill. What is the Communicative approach to Language Learning Outline the Essay
What is the Communicative approach to Language Learning Outline the learning theories on which it is based - Essay Example So, now learning English for any professional or a student has become mandatory to excel in the selected trade. There are a number of ways a language that is usually foreign to students is taught. Language expertise or even little knowledge to communicate properly or rather thoroughly express is the intension. It is well known that human psychologist say a topic or a subject is well remembered or understood when it is taught in an interactive format for that matter in a communicative approach. Students were previously taught with the aid of audio media such as cassettes which spell the language and some times even translate the grammar of the foreign language. They were known as audio lingual and grammar translation methods. These did not give learning an enough realistic feeling that is they could not teach real time usage that is appropriate social language, gestures, expressions and were not able to communicate in the culture of the language studied. Slowly a new approach to teach foreign language has mushroomed in 1970s and it was named communicative-style of teaching where usage of authentic language and classroom exchanges took place. Students here were made to communicate with fellow students and teachers with mock situations being created. Language interaction is explained asââ¬Å"Language is interaction; it is interpersonal activity and has a clean relationship with the society. In this light , language study has to look at the use of language context, both its linguistic context(what is uttered before and after a given piece of discourse) and its social or situational, context (who is speaking, what their social roles are, why they have come together to speak).â⬠(Berns, 1984) A teacher or an instructor would have already planned the schedule to follow and practice exercises. Here the focus is basically on implementing the procedures to learn the language rather than talking in it. The schedule scheduled needs to be practiced in pairs for the sake

Evolution Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
Evolution - Assignment Example At the outset, evolution being a prominent theory of science and is fundamentally and entirely based on physical and empirical evidences, which may be fossils and bacteria. Whereas, the Bible or as it is more commonly known ââ¬Å"the word of godâ⬠is not at all backed by any evidence whether it be empirical, observational, or practical, let alone physical. The belief of Christians in Bible is solely based on ââ¬Å"faithâ⬠. (Gisburne) The Bible tells us that the earth and all living things on it were ââ¬Å"createdâ⬠in 3760 BC (according to the Hebrew Calendar), and yet scientists including Darwin have discovered fossils that are millions of years old, which directly contradict the teachings of Bible according to which the fossils of humans, animals or plants could not date back more than 7000 years. (Dosick 119) Another major factor of distinction amongst beliefs is the fact that evolution supports natural selection a concept which considers survival of the fittest to be its sub category. According to the concept of natural selection, as species that were not previously habitable mutate, they supplement features or changes that are more suitable to the environment and after a long period of time, as more and more habitable creatures mate, the feature becomes generic and further evolution takes place until the fittest survive. (Darwin and Carroll 17,19,594) The Bible strongly contradicts this theory considering their own version of the theory, which they refer to as ââ¬Å"the truthâ⬠, according to which they state that God created man and humans did not evolve. But if thatââ¬â¢s true then the long list of connected fossils and matching DNA that the scientists have found would be wrong, but in reality that is not the case. The DNA of correlated species match significantly to falsify any void claims made solely on ââ¬Å"faithâ⬠. (Gisburne) (Darwin and Carroll) Besides, according to their point of view, if man has descended from god, then the scope of mutation does

Sentencing and the Eighth Amendment Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words
Sentencing and the Eighth Amendment - Essay Example clearly states that if a person is convicted more than two times for minor offenses, the third strike will either lead to a 25 year jail term or life imprisonment (Schmalleger, 2006). It was unfair to jail a person for life because he stole a bottle of vitamins. Furthermore, the court viewed the matter as a petty theft due to hunger, but the law had to be applied. Similar cases of certiorari denial will probably appear in future. This is due to the recent increase of offenses all across America, California included. Shoplifting is not something new, and the trend appears not to be dropping soon (Schmalleger, 2006). According to the California courts, the three strikes law will always apply to offenders with more than three criminal records. This can only be changed if the courts decide to amend their law. The three strikes law should apply only to severe and serious crimes. The same case applies here. It is rare for a court to go against its laws and judge a case out of common sense (Schmalleger, 2006). Hence, if a case such as Riggs is heard in the future, then the verdict will still be the same. This could only change if the courts decide to amend their
